Surf Dudes 10 Top Tips to Surfing aims to get beginners up to speed on surfing and stop bad habits from developing. Follow along and get results quick
Do not go for a hardboard straight away get a big soft board, for someone 6ft weighing 90kg an 8 to 9 ft board will be perfect meaning you can paddle quicker and be more stable in the water!
Center yourself on the board! you need to be laying on the board in the middle and have the bottom of your ribs over the center balance point of the board.
Usually, your toes are just on the end of the board and the nose is about 3 - 5 cm out of the water.
This balanced position will mean you will paddle faster and also stop the board slowing down or pearling (nose going under) on entry into the wave.
Paddle do not stop, keep your paddle smooth almost count a drumbeat in your head when the wave picks you up.
Make sure you do NOT stop paddling 3 to 5 more paddles to ensure you are on the wave!
Never go out when conditions are too much for you! at first stay in the white water and slowly start to gradually go further out, but in all cases avoid the IMPACT ZONE where the waves most commonly break!
Taking an assessment of your skill and fitness level is a key factor to staying safe in the water, never take undue risks where they can be avoided.
For beginners always make sure you are between the Black and White flags, if you get into difficulties the lifeguards can see you.
Never go into the water where there are no lifeguards however good a swimmer you think you are.
Things can get dangerous very quickly, it's often a good idea to talk to the lifeguards about any hazards you should be aware of.
To go down the line or along with the wave paddle at a slight angle to the beach in the direction you wish to take off.
When you feel the pickup, paddle 3 - 5 more times and look down the line pop up.
By looking down the line or wave your body and board will follow you, this is key.
Stay low on the pop up this will give you more stability and allow you to uncompress yourself for speed on the bottom turn.
When you can go down the line try moving up and down it by looking and twisting your torso your leading arm will guide you.
Stretch and warm-up and down before and after surfing to avoid injuries.
I cannot stress this enough do at least 5 minutes of stretches when you get in or out.
Watch other surfers see where they are lining up and see how they move up and down the wave.
I hope this helps you to get better quicker at surfing above all have FUN it's not a RACE it's a lifestyle!
