10 Top Mistakes to Surfing

Surfing Mistake 1:

Not paddling enough!

So many times you see beginners paddle for the wave and when it hits the tail they just stop, keep the paddle going!

Even once the wave has picked you up (that rush forwards) paddle an extra 3 to 4 strokes this will give you a bit more time to stabilize yourself on the board.

Surfing Mistake 2:

Moving further and further back a common mistake when surfing is for the surfer to nose dive thinking they are too far forwards they move back, moving back will not help in fact it slows you down, the reason the nose is going under is that you need more speed, more speed makes the nose lift, so keep the paddle going and lift your chest when the wave catches.

Center yourself on the board! you need to be laying on the board in the middle and have the bottom of your ribs over the center balance point of the board.

Surfing Mistake 3:

Telegraph pole!

Try to keep your knees slightly bent when you get up it will be a more stable platform to then adjust many surfers pop up straight legs and then cannot balance and fall off!

Surfing Mistake 4:

Stay in the white water until you are ready to go outback when you are a beginner you need to think about a lot of things and with the white water, it is sensory overload. Only start heading out the back to the unbroken waves when you can get up smoothly and control the board!

Mistakes when Surfing

Surfing Mistake 5:

Stay between the black and white flags for your own safety and not to annoy the more advanced surfers.

For beginners always make sure you are between the Black and White flags, if you get into difficulties the lifeguards can see you. Never go into the water where there are no lifeguards however good a swimmer you think you are. Things can get dangerous very quickly, it's often a good idea to talk to the lifeguards about any hazards you should be aware of.

Surfing Mistake 6:

Watch your exit and make sure you are not in the way of other surfers.

This is a big bugbear among more experienced surfers when surfing we make our way out back and try not to get in the way of suf=rfers already in position.

We also check our exit is clear for take-off so as not to crash into someone always check the path you wish to surf.

Surfing Mistake 7:

Never hold your board in front of you when heading into the sea carry it to the side, you will be amazed how strong the waves are when they hit your board and break your nose!

I know I have done it, avoid this mistake like the plague

Surfing Mistake 8:

Warm-up before and cool down after surfing to avoid injury

Surfing Mistake 9:

If you are new to surfing get a BIG SOFTIE!!! I know it looks cool carrying a loverly shortboard but it will slow you down and you WILL BECOME frustrated by just how hard it is even to sit on!

Surfing Mistake 10:

If you are at a new surf location talk to the locals or lifeguards about hazards be respectful of the sea otherwise it will spit you out!

I hope this helps you to get better quicker at surfing above all have FUN it's not a RACE it's a lifestyle!
