In Surfing terminology, it is good to understand different parts of the wave, visually and physically focusing on these will help you progress.
In this image we can clearly see the zones or parts of the wave, these surfing related terms will help you communicate properly with fellow surfers. Understanding the different areas of a wave will also allow you to focus your attention on these when surfing.
So for instance if I was to say I headed toward the lip you would understand I am heading up the face and maybe turning on the lip of the wave, we will now explain what these areas are for when referring to surfing.
This is the very tip of the wave and resembles a lip 👄, Generally we try to do turns here to go back down and generate more speed. Pro Surfers will use the lip for ariel tricks!
This is your area for surfing and is the fun zone, you can use this area for speed generation going up and down from the lip to the pocket.
The pocket as the name suggests is an area at the base of the wave and resembles a pocket, usually just before the flats. We want to execute radical turns to get us back up to the lip and repeat for speed generation and cut backs etc
The shoulder is an area where the wave is not breaking it's less of an energy zone good surfers are always trying to get back to the breaking wave so they can get more power from the wave. However, the shoulder can be a fun zone as it's a bit less hectic. It is a good place to get to as a beginner, especially if you are first practicing going down the line.
Avoid the flats no energy in this zone and your board will slow down quickly.
As a surfer, we do not want to get caught in the white water, but as a beginner, we can use it to practice as it pushes you along allowing you time to practice your pop-ups.
Surfers will often use the white water to bounce a turn off of or perform floaters (going over the white water lip and returning to the face).
A tube is where the wave breaks forming a space between the lip and the flats. you can surf through these tubes 🌊
That's it now you know the parts of the wave explore them!
